A sitemap is a file that lists all of the pages of a site to tell search engines about the structure of your website.

Do I Need a Sitemap?

If each of your site's pages are properly linked, most search engines will be able to discover most of the content on your site without the need for a sitemap.

A sitemap can be helpful if your site meets the following:

  • Your site has a large archive of blog posts that were recently migrated from another domain

  • You frequently post on your blog

  • Your site has a lot of pages that are not linked together

Your Showit Pages Sitemap

Showit automatically generates a sitemap of your Showit pages when you publish your site. You can submit your sitemap to Google Search Console to encourage them to check for new pages on a regular basis.

Set Up a Sitemap for Your Blog Posts

A blog that is frequently updated can benefit from a sitemap so that each post can be indexed easily by the search engines.
Here are two options for generating a sitemap for your blog posts.

Using Yoast for WordPress (preferred)

You can generate a sitemap file by installing the Yoast SEO plugin. Once the plugin is activated you can follow their steps for submitting the sitemap file to search engines

Using Jetpack for WordPress

The Jetpack plugin can also generate a Sitemap, as well as many other great features.

To enable Sitemaps, go to Jetpack → Settings → Traffic and click the toggle switch next to Generate XML Sitemaps. Once activated, Jetpack will generate two different sitemaps for you: a sitemap listing all your public posts and pages, and a News sitemap built specifically for Google News.

You'll find your Jetpack generated sitemap for your blog by going to:

Note: Replace "yourdomain" with your domain.

Submit Your Sitemap Links to Search Engines

⚠️ This is the most important step of the process. Be sure to submit your sitemaps to the search engines that you want to be sure are informed about all pages of your site and blog.

  1. Submit sitemap URLs for siteinfo.xml (and sitemap.xml if using a blog) by following the steps on this Yoast article

  • Search engines may require that you setup an account with them and verify ownership of your website prior to accepting submissions.
